“Size Matters” at the 5th Annual Danetoberfest Adoption and Fundraising Event in Pensacola

Saturday, October 2, 2021

Pensacola, Fla. (September 15, 2021)Northwest Florida Great Dane Rescue’s (NWFLGDR) lovable, gentle giants are back to take over Seville Square in downtown Pensacola on Saturday, Oct. 2, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the 5thAnnual Danetoberfest celebration and fundraising event.

This year’s Danetoberfest theme is “Size Matters.” Around two dozen adoptable Great Danes will be on site to greet festivalgoers — and happily receive treats and affection in return (hint hint). In addition, there will be many NWFLGDR alumni Great Danes in attendance, so be prepared for lots of slobber.

The goal for this event is to bring attention to the many incredible Danes currently available for adoption within the rescue; to emphasize the importance of spaying and neutering pets; to increase awareness about the benefits of adopting and fostering in your community; and to help raise $10,000 for the rescue to be used for veterinary expenses, medical supplies, food and general care expenses.

“There are a staggering number of Great Danes in need, locally and regionally, due to overbreeding. In August of this year alone we took in 30 danes, that’s more than twice the average intake per month, and we consistently have more than half a dozen on a waitlist needing to come in,” said Michelle Cramer, president of NWFLGDR. “We simply can’t keep up with the intake needs, there aren’t enough fosters. We can’t rescue our way out of this overpopulation issue. So, we hope this event helps raise awareness of our rescue’s plight and of the importance of spaying/neutering and adoption.”

This year’s event will feature almost two dozen vendors selling all kinds of arts and crafts – everything from drawings and paintings, to customized collars and dog beds, to baked goodies for people and pets, to colorful candles and soaps.

There will be four food vendors on site: Guadalupe Taco Shop selling tacos, burritos and quesadillas; Mowaffles selling cheeseburgers, waffles and desserts; Banana Bar Pensacola selling acai bowls and smoothies; and Kona Ice selling flavored ice treats.

NWFLGDR will be raffling off several major prizes for $5 a ticket or six tickets for $20:

  • 2-Night Stay at the Holiday Inn Resort Pensacola Beach Gulf Front Hotel (approximate value $1000)
  • 3-Night Stay in a 4-bedroom, bayou waterfront vacation rental home off Perdido Bay (approximate value $1200)
  • A Handcrafted Walnut Dog Frame and Bed for a giant breed dog (approximate value $1000)

In addition to the major prizes, more than 100 other items will be raffled off throughout the day – including custom artwork, gift baskets, gift cards, and collectibles — all totaling more than $10,000.

NWFLGDR relies entirely on public donations to exist. The rescue spends anywhere between $400 to $1,000, and occasionally much more, to care for each Great Dane it takes in. That includes medical treatments, food, preventatives and medication, microchip and spay/neuter surgery, but does not take into account the amount of personal time and energy it takes every foster to nurse each Dane back to health and acclimate it to a caring environment.

“Come out to the event, eat some great food, buy some raffles tickets, shop around, and let one of our gentle giants give you a slobbery welcome in person,” said Cramer. “Who knows? You just may meet your new best friend!”

Danetoberfest 2021 is a DOG-FRIENDLY event. That’s right, you can bring Fido along! All dogs must be friendly and up-to-date on vaccinations. No retractable leashes please.
